Intelligent Scenarios, New Services

Linking communication with computer technology changes the world. Scientists of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology aim at understanding and designing this progress within the framework of a new KIT Focus. Its name reflects the close relationship of communication and computer technology and its high significance: COMMputation. On November 12, the KIT Focus will celebrate its foundation.

In the course of the founding celebration on Thursday, November 12, 16 hrs, at the Tulla-Hörsaal (Englerstraße 11, building 11.40), the spokesman, Professor Hartmut Schmeck, will present the KIT Focus COMMputation. Highlights of the celebration will then be presentations by Prabhakar Raghavan from the Yahoo! Labs and by the Turing Award laureate Edmund Clarke from the Carnegie Mellon University. In a press conference on Thursday, November 12, 14.30 hrs at the Kollegiengebäude am Ehrenhof, room no. 116 (Englerstraße 11, building 11.40), journalists will be given the opportunity to obtain more information on the profile and objectives of the KIT Focus COMMputation.

COMMputation research focuses on technological progress that changes the world: Man is surrounded by a growing number of intelligent devices that enable objects in his vicinity to interact, to perceive their environment, and to constantly adapt to new requirements. The more intensive they are to communicate with each other and with man, the more complex and the more transparent, the more exact and the more manageable do the computation processes running in the background have to be. This needs intelligent solutions that are developed by the KIT scientists linking their competencies in five areas: eOrganization and Service Engineering, Grid and Scientific Computing, Algorithm and Software Engineering, Communication Technology, and Systems Engineering.

In a number of large-scale research projects, scientists under the direction of Professor Schmeck develop concepts, IT architectures, methods, and tools for selected scenarios like intelligent houses, smart cars, or intelligent market places. “Future strongly linked and adaptable systems and services will have to guarantee a trustworthy, robust, and efficient behavior in spite of their complexity”, underlines Schmeck.   
 
The founding celebration of the KIT Focus COMMputation is embedded in the Day of the Faculty of Information Science on November 12 and 13.
