KIT Climate Researcher Receives Award
The Nobel Sustainability Trust honored Professor Klaus Butterbach-Bahl from KIT with the Sustainability Award 2024 in San Francisco on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The climate scientist received the award for his research on the environmental impact of global agriculture, especially with regard to land management as a source of greenhouse gases.
Quantifying climate impact
“My goal is to develop robust data and models to quantify the environmental impacts of land management on greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and nitrate pollution in groundwater, and to develop concepts to minimize these impacts,” says Butterbach-Bahl. “The fact that my work has now been rewarded with the Sustainability Award confirms my team and me in our efforts to provide clarity in this area.”
As a senior scientist at the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research Atmospheric Environmental Research, KIT Alpine Campus in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and as Director of the Danish Pioneer Centre for Landscape Research in Sustainable Agricultural Futures at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, Butterbach-Bahl has made a significant contribution to quantifying the environmental impacts of agriculture, particularly in relation to greenhouse gases and nitrogen pollution.
