Having been awarded their school leaving certificates, many graduates of secondary schools are already sure that they will start studying. The decision as to which subject is the correct choice, however, is much more difficult. In addition, organizational questions arise from application to funding the studies. Aid will be offered by the second “Long Night of Counseling” of the KIT Center for Information and Counseling (zib) on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, from 18 to 23 hrs at zib, Zähringerstrasse 65.

“The need for information prior to studies is very high, in particular of those who have decided spontaneously and of undecided,” says zib employee Oliver Broschart. According to him, many have no idea as to which course of studies fits to their personal prerequisites. During the long night of counseling, the zib team will therefore not only inform about studies contents, but also about what makes the success of studies. ”We want to do our best that the young people start with realistic conceptions,” says Broschart. An important issue is the funding of the studies. “BAföG funding and grants are options for many students.” The six modules of the “Long Night of Counseling” have a duration of thirty minutes each and cover engineering sciences, natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, economics, business management, the humanities and social sciences, architecture, arts, and design as well as pedagogics. In addition, information on the organization of the studies will be provided, from studies costs and funding to “successful studies”. Partly, the modules are repeated, such that participants are given free room for personal conversation with the counselors.

On July 15, the application deadline for most of the study courses in Karlsruhe and Pforzheim will expire. More than 100 basic study courses, about half at KIT, are available for choice in Karlsruhe and Pforzheim alone.

The Center for Information and Counseling (zib) is the central counseling office for KIT and seven other universities in the region of Karlsruhe and Pforzheim. Seven professional counselors offer individual conversations on all studies-relevant topics, telephone counseling, information events, and workshops. About 80 information brochures as well as an own library may be consulted. Further information may be obtained at www.zib.kit.edu.
