More than 4100 young people will start their studies at KIT in the 2010/2011 winter semester. Many of them have familiarized with their new surroundings during the orientation phase already. Now, KIT will welcome the new students with a celebration that will take place on Friday, October 22, 18 hrs, at the Johannes-Brahms-Saal of Stadthalle Karlsruhe. Journalists are cordially invited.
KIT President Professor Eberhard Umbach will introduce KIT to the new students and their families. The largest German science institu-tion offers students many special opportunities. The close link be-tween large-scale research on Campus North and education and teaching on Campus South makes for an environment that is unique in Germany. Students are given early insight into research projects and can gather experience for their later work during the studies already. By the increasing integration of research staff in teaching activities, KIT also improves the relationship between students and lecturers.
At the celebration event, 32 students will be granted prizes for their extraordinary commitment in cultural, social, scientific or economic university groups or as contact partners of their fellow students at the departments.
Last week, the new students received a “starter package” from the KIT Career Service. The backpack for new students among others contains information material of the Studentenwerk, the General Students Committee (AStA), and various KIT facilities and university groups. In addition, the “Erstsemester Guide to KIT” is given to the students. This brochure compiles important information on studies, central facilities, services, and counseling offers of KIT.

Parallel to the start of the new semester, the next issue of the online students magazine “clicKIT“ will be published. Under www.kit.edu/clickit, it will supply 26 pages of latest information and details on studies at KIT, working life, and campus life. The editorial staff of clicKIT will present the magazine at the KIT booth in the entrance hall of the Stadthalle after the welcome celebration.
