The Karlsruher Universitätsgesellschaft (KUG, Karlsruhe Uni-versity Society) will fund projects in the KIT University Sector with about EUR 100,000 next year. For the first time, KUG will grant scholarships and provide for the funding of ten excellent students at KIT for one year under the national fellowship pro-gram (Deutschlandstipendium). Today, KUG presented its fund-ing efforts to the press.
The first Deutschland-Stipendien (Germany Scholarships) at univer-sities shall be granted in the 2011 summer semester. This program is intended to support talented and excellent students. The scholar-ships in the amount of EUR 300 per month are to be funded at a ratio of 50:50 by private sponsors (companies, foundations, private persons) and the Federal Republic of Germany. Today, KUG prom-ised funds in the total amount of EUR 18,000 for ten scholarships at KIT from the 2011 summer semester. “With the funds, we wish to set an example and to encourage enterprises and private persons to invest in the excellent training of tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs,” underlined the Chairman of KUG, Honorary Senator Horst Marschall, and the first Deputy Chairman, Professor Fritz Frimmel, at today’s press conference.
Other projects in the coming year will be the funding of the Collegi-um Musicum, interdisciplinary lectures, and the Heinrich Hertz guest professorship. In addition, KUG will fund a light scattering detector for the detection and highly sensitive identification of carbohydrate derivatives.
KUG will also subsidize the publication of a lecture series and an illustrated book “Kirchenräume im Wandel” (Church spaces under the influence of change). Moreover, KUG will cover the traveling ex-penses of students taking part in exercises and seminars abroad.
KUG sponsors the KIT University Sector. Its major sponsoring crite-ria are need, excellence, and innovation.
