In the current QS World University Ranking, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide. In Germany, KIT confirmed its position as one of the best universities with place 4.
In European comparison, KIT continues to be listed in the top 40 with place 37. These rankings confirm the constant high quality of research and academic education and the innovative strength of KIT.
The reputation of KIT and its graduates among employers is very good. In the survey, KIT reaches place 3 in Germany (place 44 worldwide).
Already this spring did KIT reach excellent QS rankings in certain subjects. In a total of eight subjects, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was among the best 100 universities worldwide. In two subjects – materials sciences and physics – KIT even is in the top 50 of the world. This is obvious from the “QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016” published in spring. In natural sciences worldwide, KIT’s physics reached place 23, materials sciences was ranked in place 40, and chemistry was in the group from 51 to 100. In the area of engineering and technology, KIT was ranked in the group of 51 – 100 in mechanical engineering, informatics, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, and civil engineering. In Germany, KIT was in second position in materials sciences and reached place three in informatics and physics. The following subjects of KIT were also ranked in the top ten in Germany: Electrical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, chemistry, architecture, mechanical engineering, mathematics, and earth sciences. Hence, eleven subjects of KIT reached the German top ten.
The QS World University Ranking is based on the criteria of academic reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per scientist, reputation among employers, and the proportion of international scientists and students. These data are determined from statistics and surveys of scholars and staff managers. Since 2010, QS has been publishing an own ranking (before, it co-edited the THE Ranking) that is largely based on reputation indicators. Every autumn, the overall ranking is published, the ranking by subject is issued in spring.
