In the 2024 edition of the QS University Rankings by Subject, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is in 46th place worldwide in natural sciences and in 48th place in engineering sciences. In Germany, KIT is ranked 3rd in both subject areas. The QS World University Rankings by Subject rank universities by subject in 5 areas. Overall, KIT is among the best 100 universities worldwide in 15 subjects. Of all German universities, KIT is ranked highest in environmental sciences, chemical engineering, and petroleum engineering.
In the natural sciences subject area, KIT is in the top 50 worldwide in three subjects: In materials sciences it is in 29th place (Germany: Position 3), in chemistry in 47th place (Germany: Position 2), and in physics in 42nd place (Germany: Position 4), In the subjects of geophysics (Ranking group 51 – 100), geology (Ranking group 51 – 100), environmental sciences (Place 65), and earth and marine sciences (Ranking group 51 – 100), KIT is among the best 100 universities worldwide. Of all German universities, KIT is ranked in 1st place in environmental sciences and in 2nd place in geology and earth and marine sciences.
In the subject area of engineering and technology, KIT reaches best results in chemical engineering (worldwide: Place 21, Germany: Place 1), mechanical engineering (worldwide: Place 37, Germany, Place 3), and petroleum engineering. KIT for the first time appears in the ranking for this subject and is in 29th place (Germany: Place 1).
Major Improvements Compared to 2023
Overall, KIT has improved in seven subjects. In four subjects, it is ranked for the first time. In 15 of 19 subjects, KIT is ranked in the top 100. Of all German universities, KIT is in first place in three subjects and reaches several second and third places.
