Guest lecture by Carl Mitcham "Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technology in China: Observational Notes"

Monday, 14 October 2024, 11:00-12:30
Institut für Technikfolgenabschätzung und Systemanalyse (ITAS), Karlstr. 11, 76133 Karlsruhe

Having visited China for over 30 years, for Carl Mitcham there are some interesting and to some extent characteristic ways in which Chinese culture and politics have been relating to technological development and innovation. Based on his own experience, he will discuss a few informal interpretative observations about how China has been and is trying to manage socially disruptive technologies. He will profile a few individuals and institutions to highlight the key features of such socio-political and cultural engagements in the Chinese context.

Carl Mitcham is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden (Colorado, USA) and an international Professor of Philosophy of Technology at Renmin University of China in Beijing.
